M Audio Mobilepre Usb

Hi there, just wondering if anyone out there can PLEASE HELP?!!
Yesterday I bought an M-Audio MobilePre for use with Garageband 08 (version 4).
I'm running an iMac - operating system OX 10.4.11
When I plug in my guitar (for example) I can hear the signal coming through but the guitar is permanently panned to the left earphone of my headphones.
I seemed to fix this problem by going to the MobilePre pref pane and clicked on the Direct Monitor so that it is Left Only (mono). My guitar is now coming through in both left AND right speakers on my headphones (stereo). So far, so good.....
However, when I go to record a new guitar track, add an effect (eg: flange) I can hear the 'clean' guitar signal in stereo..........along with the flanged signal - which is still panned to the left of my headphones.
Then, when I record the song, on playback the flanged guitar track is still stuck to the left - and the pan buttons in Garageband are ineffective.
So the track isn't in stereo.
On Garagband's main window frame there are three options I can click (in the bottom right-hand corner):
Input Source: Mono 1 (M-Audio MobilePre USB)
Input Source: Mono 2 (M-Audio MobilePre USB)
Input source: Stereo1/2 (M-Audio MobilePre USB)
None of these seem to fix the problem.
I'd be really REALLY grateful if you can offer some help!!
Many thanks...
Ade
