Want to learn how to get started using Redshift with Cinema 4D? In this tutorial, Chad Ashley walks you through all the starting points. Redshift is quickly becoming one of the most popular third-party render engines, especially among Cinema 4D users. It’s really fast, and can deliver amazing results.

As you may already know Maxon recently announced that Cinema 4D is now a “SaaS” (Software as a Service) starting this fall with Cinema 4D R21. Maxon has also combined all other flavors of Cinema 4D into one unified offering. This streamlined version of Cinema 4D has all the functionality of their previous top tier “Studio” version with all the new updates.

Over the past decade, it has become more popular and profitable for software companies to make the big switch from perpetual licensing to subscription-based licensing. This change has had many effects; both perceived as good and evil. For the most part, it has allowed for further development of advanced tools while slowing down the frequency of software piracy. The model of paying a monthly fee for software that was once available for a one time fee and optional upgrades can be seen as a bad thing. However, the math doesn’t always agree.

  • So when is Mac users be able to render cinema 4d faster using third party plugins?, for those who has AMD GPUs, seems a bit ironic because since apple has denied Nvidia GPU, people started to use PC for rendering. But for those who cant witch or also has the option to run faster using bootcamp st.

Too often, I hear creative professionals complaining about having to purchase expensive software to make a living. This situation has become less frequent since the industry has had time to adjust to Adobe “Creative Suite,” making the change to the “Creative Cloud.” We always have to keep in mind that although you may feel like a captive consumer, the reality is that the people behind the scenes working to build the new features and smooth out all the bugs along the way need to make a living and without their creativity we would never be able to be creative professionals ourselves. So I wanted to take a closer look at Maxon’s recent announcement to see if it was as good as it looks on the surface.

Pros

More Simplified:

  • All in one edition eliminates buyers remorse for the artist who feels they miss out on the latest features in every module of the software.
  • Allows file handoff to any artist with confidence that they will be able to open edit and render without issues (unless there are missing plugins, let’s face it there always will be), this is an increasing issue as remote, and freelance work is on the rise.
  • Bolsters individual Cinema 4D artist ability to plug and play for better pipeline integration and scaling.
  • Bug fixes will theoretically propagate faster due to less development effort to maintain five different versions of Cinema 4D.

New Features regularly:

  • Features can be added more frequently without having to justify a whole unique Release Number
  • You know you will always be up to date and using the “latest and greatest” features, so you don’t miss out on all the latest tutorials and trends.
  • Having Redshift bundled is always a plus for those of you who have wanted to try it out but never thought it was worth the $500 [USD] price tag (although there is a small downside to this bundle, more on that later.)

Fewer Barriers to entry:

  • Lower initial cost barrier allowing artists to learn Cinema 4D tools with minimal commitment. We all have work to do, and some times a month is just not enough time.
  • Now you can learn a new skill with less monetary commitment, and that is great for the industry as a whole to gain traction and skills
  • Offers a more affordable way to brush up on the latest version of the software if you need it for infrequent jobs.
  • Priced well for those who already keep up-to-date, to begin with

Cons (for now)

With everything becoming more streamlined, it seems that the upgrade options for current license owners are hidden and intentionally less attractive. Upgrades from R20 to R21 will be available, but you have to contact Maxon directly to see what options are available for you. It is not yet clear what these options are and if they will extend to those who are upgrading from older versions. Maxon will more than likely benefit from this confusion, whether it is an oversight or a built-in plan to mitigate any unforeseen losses from the switch to the subscription model. It may also be Maxon trying to show customers that they will benefit from being up to date at every turn while saving money. Be sure to select the right plan for your situation.

The Redshift Bundle could be a little bit of a trap if you aren’t careful:

Crack

If you are unsure of your longterm use cases mainly if you aim to leave the Maxon sandbox from time to time or want to be able to experiment. The largest and main downside that I can see is, In the long run, Redshift is slightly more expensive through the subscription bundle and won’t support 3rd party software.

As this is the first time we have seen the result of the recent acquisition of Redshift, I hesitate to cast judgment and want to see Redshift flourish in the new Maxon garden. It seems to be a good deal, but when you dig a bit deeper, that is not the case, at least for the time being. An option to have an unlocked version of Redshift with the subscription would be ideal. And for Maxon’s apparent drive to simplify its offerings, this seems to run counter to that. Splitting their newest purchase into two versions with separate functionality where there was one version before. It may be an attempt to influence and hold new cinema 4d artist in their walled garden while making a small premium on top of the current price of Redshift’s Maintenance Extensions.

Purchasing a Licence from Redshift:

$500 (USD) for a single Node-locked license

Macular

$250 (USD) for 1-year maintenance extension

Subscribing to Redshift through Maxon’s “Cinema 4D with Redshift” bundle:

$264 (USD) additional yearly cost on top of Cinema 4D Annual Subscription

($22/m x 12 months = $264)

I have taken the cost of the Redshift render engine and extrapolated out for three years of one license. I am assuming that, if you buy into the new subscription ecosystem, you will be there for a while. It remains to be seen if this pricing and Cinema 4D locked. Redshift bundle will remain the case into future updates. It will get a little cloudy when you start to explore the month-to-month options. I stuck with the annual billing options assuming the average user requires ongoing access to the software.

Current Redshift license holder with an up-to-date Maintenance Agreement:

3 years of maintenance extension = $750 (USD)

New Redshift User Purchasing Redshift node-locked license (for use with all supported software):

Redshift For Cinema 4d Macular

3 years of maintenance extension including upfront cost = $1000

The only risky situation you could find yourself in is needing to purchase a stand-alone license of Redshift after subscribing to the “Cinema 4D with Redshift” Bundle. This locked version of Redshift may become an issue if you need to render or move your scene to another software package. You would end up paying $1292 for three years of licensing. This situation will be rare, and avoided with a little planning or choosing to bring all scene files into Cinema 4D to render (I think this bifurcation of Redshift’s functionality exists for this sole purpose)

It seems that having to spend an extra $42.00 to $69.00 a year (over three years) to have the ability to render in other software isn’t such a bad option. On top of this, it seems a little odd how the redshift license is available, and if you do need to port over to a different software for one job you have to purchase a perpetual license, Maxon will benefit from that. It remains to be seen if they open the subscription version up to all supported software or keep this annoying loophole as a way to get a return on their investment or if it is just a necessary part of the new interface that changes over time.

Final thoughts

Overall the costs are not that different but where you may find yourself in hot water is moving out of the “Maxon Walled Garden” to use your new favorite (third-party turned first-party) GPU Renderer in a supported software package such as Maya or Houdini. If you already use Redshift, you can retain your initial investment and the ability to use it in all other supported software by keeping up with your maintenance and opting for the stand-alone cinema 4D annual billed option.

For more pricing information, be sure to pop over to Maxon’s website and press release to check out for yourself. The list prices are in Euros. To change the currency to suit your region, the “Change Region” option at the top of the page offers pricing based on your area of the world if it’s available. Also, head over to Redshift to see if the node-locked license is right for you.

Redshift For Cinema 4d Machine Learning

Release 21 is the first iteration of cinema 4D in its new form, and it’s not for sure if this will drive more interest to the platform and help develop more competitive features. It will also be interesting to see if Redshift will continue to be available as a stand-alone license or if Maxon will make it a fully subscription-based software with options for using Redshift outside of the newly minted “Maxon Walled Garden” over the next few years. There have been recent rumblings that Redshift will be releasing a version that can run on CUDA or Metal, which will be great news for mac users. So stay tuned for a review once that is released.

With all that said, moving forward I am heavily leaning towards using the stand-alone Cinema 4D Annual Subscription and continuing to purchase Redshift Maintenance extensions, for as long as they are available. What are your thoughts on the switch to subscription-based software licenses for Maxon or any other 3D related software? Leave your thoughts in the comments.
